Description: 8 strand round plait. How to make an (more...) eight strand round plait. Parachute cord round plait.
Video shows how to use coreless paracord to make a round braid. Eight strands is what is used but the same technique will work from 4 to 16 strands. This is the first step in learning how to make your own whip and what is more fun than using nothing but muscle power to drive a bit of string through the speed of sound?
You can also make it as a paracord lanyard, belt, hatband, bracelet, etc. Always wear eye protection around paracord. (less)

Description: With your left hand facing palm up make (more...) three round turns around your left hand. Pull the turn closest to your thumb under the second turn then pull the running end through the bight. Cross all turns with the running end placing it nearest to your thumb. Turn your hand over and tuck the running end under the turn nearest it and leave it nearest your fingertips. Pull a bight from the topmost turn under then feed the running end from bottom up through that eye. The running end now is tucked in to parallel the standing part and you continue to follow to fill out the knot. (less)

Paracord bundle

Description: This method of rope handling came from (more...) the Japanese. Pirates during the warring states period used such bundles to secure prisoners among other shipboard duties and the bundle stays alive today in hojujitsu. A few fathoms of paracord in a pocket and a handier tool aboard a boat it would be hard to find. (less)

Video shows how to use coreless paracord to make a round braid. You should look at the 8 strand video first. This is the overplait with 12 strands. The next video will discuss dropping strands. Stay tuned. (less)
Eye Splice
Produced By:
Taipan on 03 May 2008
Tags: marineboatnauticalknot(more...)hitchspliceeye-spliceeyefancy(less)
Description: Most eye splice instructions have you (more...) tuck in first one side then turn the splice over and repeat. This type is different. Unravel as much as you think you will need plus 50%. Tie off the running end and whip the ends of the individual strands. Tuck the middle strand under a lay of the rope first. The strand on the left of that is tucked under the lay behind the first tuck. Now the splice is turned over and the remaining running end is tucked under so that all three running strands are coming out at the same level on the standing part. Each strand goes over the lay next to it and under the following. Three courses is sufficient. Whip or taper to finsih. (less)
Tensioning Knot

Tags: hitchmarineboatnautical(more...)knottensiontensioning(less)
Description: The tensioning knot is the one I use to (more...) tie the strands of my whips to the rope machine. It is also useful anytime that quick tension is needed and a truckers hitch is too much or the distance is too short. Tie a noose in the line and snug it up then a slippery half hitch locks it in place. (less)
Portuguese Bowline
Produced By:
Taipan on 03 May 2008
Tags: marineboatnauticalknot(more...)knotworkhitchbendportuguesebowlinefancy(less)
Description: This method makes the knot quick and (more...) easy to tie. It is useful when you expect a blow and need to take a few turns around your winch to use as an additional hardpoint. In this case I am simulating a mast winch but the process can be used on a horizontally mounted winch as well. The secret is to form the bowline eye by capsizing an overhand knot. With the standing part in your left hand form a turn around the winch from top to bottom then cross the running end over the standing part to form an overhand knot. Then pull the running end parallel to the standing part to capsize the knot and form the eye of the bowline. Then pass the running end behind the standing part and back through the eye to finish the knot. The difference is that this version of the Portugese Bowline is tied in the middle of the rope and has a double turn. The result is a knot that can take more weight than a single line. As an added safety factor you can pass the running end over the winch to prevent the possibility of the knot coming untied. (less)

Description: The Fooles lashing is inspired by the (more...) Prusik based Fooles cuff and is a variation of the Texas Handcuff which has been used for fast lashing and appears on the cover of Ashley's Book of Knots (ABOK) This variation doubles the turns making it more suitable for nautical applications such as creating a temporary mast cradle or boom gallows. It can also serve as a sturdy lashing for creating a tripod. (less)
