Latitude XFR D630: A Laptop for Harsh Environments
Added on: 02 Jun 2008

Description: Today, customers in the United States (more...) who are in need of a rugged laptop can order the Latitude XFR D630. It builds on the Latitude ATG D620 by offering new laptop technology in a chassis that's more rugged than ever before. It meets the Department of Defense's rigid MIL-STD 810F specifications that are aimed at products that are used in extreme temperatures, mositure, altitudes, etc. In designing the product, Dell worked to bring perfomance and durability together. Compared to many other competitive products that use older technology, the XFR stands out in terms of overall performance. It also joins the Dell Precision M4300 mobile workstations as one of our first systems that support the new generation of solid state hard drives. For those customers that opt for a traditional hard drive, the XFR D630 features shock-isolated mounting to help protect the hard drive, LCD and core electronic components. So what makes it a rugged laptop? A sealed keyboard protects it from driving rain and dust; port covers protect external ports from the elements. it also features a display with a brightness of 500 nits - which makes it suitable for outdoor viewing. Also worth noting that we support integrated resistive touchscreen technology as an option for an extra $500 on the Latitude XFR D630. Brett McAnally from the commercial product notebook team takes you through some of the details of the system, explains the kinds of customers who we designed it for, and discusses what distinguishes this prouct from others in this field. Pricing starts at $3,899. See www.dell.com/xfr for more info on this product. (less)

XPS 630: Gaming Power for the Masses
Added on: 01 Jun 2008
Tags: DellXPS(more...)Gaming(less)
Description: I warned you. Today, customers in the (more...) United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe and Japan can order the XPS 630. It's a gaming desktop meant to pack a lot of power into a smaller chassis. Granted, smaller is a relative term - it's smaller compared to the XPS 720: the XPS 630 has a starting weight of about 39 pounds compared to almost 48 pounds for its larger cousin. The goal behind the XPS 630 was to provide great performance and expandability at a reasonable price point. We call it a mainstream gaming system. It supports many of the same high-end options that the XPS 720 does, with a starting price of $1,249. That's where the mainstream part comes from. The Dell folks I talked to were pretty excited about the XPS 630, and based on early awards from CNET, PC Magazine and HotHardware, I'm glad to see they're not alone. But enough about that, let's jump into the more technical details. By popular demand, the XPS 630 utilizes a motherboard based on the popular ATX form factor. It's based on a Dell implementation of NVIDIA's 650i chipset, is the first OEM system to support NVIDIA's new Enthusiast System Architecture (ESA) and all units will come with a 750W power supply. It also supports Intel processors (initially we'll support the quad-core Q6600 processor and the and Core 2 Extreme QX 6850, with more coming soon) and several graphics card options from both ATI and NVIDIA. We'll offer certain dual graphics card options in Crossfire mode or SLI mode, depending on whether you prefer ATI or NVIDIA. In terms of memory, we also support Corsair DDR2 Dominator 800MHz Enhanced Performance Profile (EPP) modules that can be overclocked to1066MHz. For folks that want to take performance a step further, you will have the opportunity to overclock the parts of the system through the system BIOS and software like NVIDIA's nTune application, much like the XPS 720 today. Unlike the XPS 720, however, we will not ship the XPS 630 overclocked from the factory. Because there's a lot more to discuss on that front, we'll blog about overclocking soon. And look for an overclocking vlog in the not-too-distant future. In this vlog, I interview Lee Kinder from the XPS Desktop Team about the system overall. He also discusses design elements, talks specs, hardware and OS options, overclocking and more. (less)

Description: Today we completed the EqualLogic (more...) acquisition, a leading provider of high-performance storage area network (SAN) solutions designed for virtualization and ease-of-use. The purchase extends Dell's leadership in simplifying IT for customers. Customers face extreme challenges with data growth. Storage solutions that use existing infrastructure, install in minutes not days, manage themselves, can grow easily as needs increase and plug into the virtualized IT ecosystem will help businesses with their storage needs. EqualLogic provides these storage solutions and that's the incredible value that Dell will now be able to deliver to our customers. With Dell's PartnerDirect channel, we will unleash the power of iSCSI and virtualization to redefine the economics of storing and processing data. Dell plans to preserve and build on EqualLogic's successful channel program in addition to offering products directly from Dell. Starting today in the U.S. and ultimately around the world, current EqualLogic partners will be enrolled into PartnerDirect and are eligible for Dell's newest certification - Enterprise Architecture. Certification requirements and benefits are modeled after EqualLogic's widely-regarded channel program and extend the benefits of Dell's full server and storage product lines. Here's a vlog where Darren Thomas, VP/GM Dell Storage, talks more about this acquisition. (less)
