Description: An estimated $900 million will be spent (more...) on social media advertising in the United States this year, and that figure is estimated to hit $2.5 billion by 2011. This is for advertising only. Millions more are being invested in other social media marketing techniques as websites like FaceBook and MySpace offer increasing opportunities for businesses to reach potential customers.
Social media websites are only beginning to realize their full potential and are quickly offering improved advertising opportunities for businesses.
While MySpace remains the market leader, FaceBook's recently launched FaceBook Ads system has added a feature where users can recommend products to friends. It's estimated that an individual is three to five times more likely to buy a product if a friend uses and recommends it. In addition, FaceBook is also allowing corporate profiles. Microsoft, Sony, Coca-Cola and Blockbuster are already among the heavyweight names that have signed up.
There are also more traditional web advertising opportunities available on FaceBook. You can buy traditional banner ads that will be placed at the top of pages. You can also buy flyers that can be targeted at a particular university, company, or group.
These are a great way of targeting a specific audience. (less)

Description: The use of social media websites for (more...) marketing is growing fast. However, this is new ground for many marketers and, as it matures, certain legal issues will emerge. In this article, I look at a few potential legal pitfalls and how to avoid them.
Because social network marketing involves the publishing or broadcast of online content, many existing, traditional media law apply to content on social media websites.
Copyright is the big one, with "fair use" on the forefront. Copyright law protects any type of content whether it is text, audio, video — whether or not an actual copyright statement exists on the content. To keep yourself safe, always quote sources. Even if you don't use a statement word-for-worth, it's better to attribute statements to known sources.
Services such as CopyScape offer website owners and web content providers the ability to check their writing against other content on the web. But, it won't check older, or archived, content that doesn't exist on the web. Just because content has been checked with CopyScape doesn't mean it wasn't plagiarized. (less)

Use Social Networking for Market Research

Description: Traditionally, marketers used (more...) demographics (compiled by market research firms) as one of the main tools to identify and target potential customers. Factors such as a person's age, sex, and where they live remain important to getting your message across to the right people. However, social networking provides a new opportunity to assess markets in near real-time.
Word of mouth has always been one of the most powerful marketing methods — people more often that not use the products that their friends like and recommend. Social media sites can provide this type of data on numerous products and services. Want to find the best laptop computer? Doing a traditional Google search won't get you far. Why? Because you won't get a recommendation, or multiple recommendations. More than likely, you'll get review sites.
However, do a search on a social networking site, and I guarantee you will find a list of what people think are the best laptops.
Because of the open nature of social networking, you can easily find your customers and see what they do online and who their friends are. Friends of your customers are an excellent target market. In fact, research has shown that people are as much as five times more likely to buy a product if their friends like it. (less)

Marketing Techniques for your Social Networking Website

Description: Web 2.0 has its own unique look and (more...) feel, indeed it's become a culture unto itself. If you plan to setup your own social networking site, learn from the successes and failure of previous entries. This article examines the characteristics of a successful Web 2.0 website.
On of the biggest coups in Web 2.0 marketing so far has been GMail. Hotmail, owned by Microsoft, found success years earlier by offering free email accounts to anyone. GMail made their free email service available by invite only, at least initially. The fact that you had to be invited created a huge buzz. At one point a GMail account was one of the most sought after items on the internet — I even saw GMail invites being offered on eBay! So, exclusivity, at least initially, can build buzz.
Theme. What is your site about? How are you different than the hundreds, and possibly thousands, of other social media sites out there? Don't try to be the next MySpace or FaceBook. Those niches are long gone. In fact, you may have to create a niche of a niche. Be creative. Being the first in your niche will determine whether you're successful or not.
Invite people to your website as beta testers. Be exclusive. Beta has the "cool" element that makes participants feel they are part of something new and original. (less)

Description: Social networking sites are a great way (more...) for small and mid-sized businesses to build a customer base. There are several different types of social networking sites that are designed for different purposes, which one you choose depends on the product or service you are trying to market as well as what your ultimate goal is.
With its 150,000-person invitation-only network, ASmallWorld is an exclusive network meant only for the super rich, whereas newly launched IncBizNet is designed to be a small-business networking site. Facebook and MySapce are huge general interest networks which have primarily targeted the under 30 crowd.
Once you get your business connected to a social networking site, it's a simple process to build your contacts. But how do you turn a contact list into a client list? In reality, the better question is, how can I get contacts to turn themselves into clients?
Choosing the correct network is the key to converting contacts into loyal customers. Below are strategies that can help you turn your social network membership into an effective sales generating tool. (less)
Ethics in Social Network Marketing

Description: Unethical marketing practices on social (more...) media websites has backfired...badly. As in all marketing situations, it pays to have integrity. While much of social networking is out of your hands, there are many factors that you can control that will keep you out of the hot seat.
The first thing that you must always keep in mind when you embark on a social network marketing campaign is that you are joining a community. As with any community, business has its rightful place, but it does not have the right to invade people's privacy. In your face, non-targeted, spam marketing will get you nowhere in a hurry.
Most social network marketers use websites like FaceBook and MySpace to try to drive traffic to another website. While it's perfectly ethical to use social networking websites to spread a message to people who are genuinely interested, many people game the system with auto-friend adding programs and spam messages and bulletins. Again, anything non-targeted and spammy will not help your reputation. (less)
